I am quite amazed at the number of people in the service industry that don’t smile, who don’t even make eye contact. Individuals who appear not to care.
We all know indifference is a killer in business.
Business owners, do you see them? Are you paying attention to their persona? Who hired them? Who trained them? Who supervises them?
If these people work for you, help them. Make sure they know they are required to be pleasant – to connect (eye contact) and yes, to smile. They may simply need guidance but if they are not the right fit for a service role, move them to a role suited to their strengths.
Mother Teresa said: “I will never understand all the good that a simple smile can accomplish.”
Smiling is not just a universal means of communicating, it is also a frequent one. Hire right – assign them to the right roles for their strengths – and train train train.
Smiling sets a tone. A smile and eye contact establish a rapport and initiates trust.
Yes team, if you are in front of customers, you are required to (genuinely) smile! To connect. To welcome. You really can’t do that if you appear to be asleep. Remember, you are not only responsible for your company’s image. You are also responsible for yours.
